Google Ads vs. Local Services Ads for Law Firms: When to Use Each
Google Search Ads and Local Services Ads serve different purposes in a law firm marketing system. Running them without coordination wastes budget. Here is how to split them.

What each channel actually is
Google Search Ads are text ads that appear at the top of search results for keywords you bid on. You pay per click, control the copy, and send traffic to any landing page you want. Local Services Ads (LSAs) are Google Screened or Google Verified listings that appear above search ads for local service searches. You pay per lead — a phone call or message — and Google controls the placement and the lead form.
When Google Search Ads win
Search Ads are the right tool when you need precision. You can target exact keywords, exclude irrelevant searches with negative keywords, build dedicated landing pages for each ad group, and track every click to a form submission or a call. For high-cost practice areas like personal injury, where a single click can cost $100 or more, this control is the whole game.
- Exact-match and phrase-match keyword control
- Negative keyword discipline to filter out low-quality traffic
- Dedicated landing pages per ad group for higher conversion
- Full click-through and conversion tracking
When Local Services Ads win
LSAs are the right tool for urgency and local trust. They appear above the search ads, carry the Google Screened badge, and charge per lead rather than per click. For practice areas where the map pack drives the hire — criminal defense, family law, immigration — LSAs are often the highest-converting channel. The trade-off is less control: Google sets the cost per lead, controls the lead form, and you cannot send traffic to a custom landing page.
Why they have to be coordinated
The most common mistake is running Search Ads and LSAs independently. They compete for the same searches, and without coordination you end up paying twice for the same click — once on the LSA lead, and again on the Search Ad click underneath it. The fix is to coordinate the two channels: segment by practice area, adjust LSA budgets based on Search performance, and review lead quality weekly to catch low-quality LSA leads early.
How to split the budget
There is no universal split. A personal injury firm might run 40% Search Ads and 15% LSAs because the precision of keyword control matters more at $100+ per click. A criminal defense firm might run 35% Search Ads and 25% LSAs because the map pack carries the case. The split should be informed by your cost per signed case per channel, not by what the platform recommends.
